HYLTON
GATEWAY
RACE
RECAP |
 |
James
Hylton
races
to
23rd
in
Final
Gateway
Start
Memphis,
TN
(July
30,
2006)
–
Seventy
one-year
old
racing
legend
James
Hylton
finished
23rd
in
his
final
start
at
Gateway
International
in
the
Shop
n'
Save
150
ARCA
RE/MAX
Series
event.
Hylton,
driving
the
Mountain
Rock
Music
Ford
Taurus,
completed
133
of
the
races 142
laps.
"The
car
handled
superbly"
stated
the
seventy-one
year
old
legend
"it
was
a
pleasure
to
compete
in
my
last
race
at
Gateway
in
a
car
that
performed
so
well.
I
also
felt
fortunate
to
not
be
involved
in
any
of
the
accidents
that
took
place
on
track
at
Gateway."
The
Shop
n
Save
150
had
ten
cautions
for
a
total
of
64
laps
out
of
the
142
ran.
Hylton
also
considered
himself
lucky
at
the
end
of
the
race
when
a
blown
engine
on
the
Frank
Kimmel
Ford
left
the
track
covered
in
smoke.
"It
was
definitely
a
finish
that
I
will
always
remember
with
the
track
being
covered
in
white
smoke"
said
Hylton
"
I
couldn't
see
the
flag
stand
or
much
of
anything
for
that
matter.
It
kind
of
reminded
me
of
being
behind
a
mosquito
spraying
truck.
They
shouldn't
have
any
bug
problem
at
the
track
for
a
long
time."
When
it
came
to
race
winner
Cale
Gale,
Hylton
was
very
complimentary
of
the
rookie's
performance.
"Cale
Gale
drove
the
wheels
off
the
car
and
got
the
job
done
plane
and
simple"
states
Hylton
"
I
met
him
before
the
race
and
he
is
a
real
nice
guy.
He
is
the
shock
specialist
for
Finch
Racing
and
that
is
exactly
how
I
began
my
career.
I
started
off
working
on
shocks
for
Louis
Clements,
the
car
owner
and
crew
chief
for
Rex
White"
The
season
has
been
termed
the
"White
Flag
Tour"
and
brings
one
of
the
most
impressive
careers
in
motorsports
to
a
close.
Hylton
entered
the
racing
scene
in
a
big
way
with
an
impressive
second
place
finish
in
the
season-long
NASCAR
Grand
National
standings
in
1966.
Hylton
was
also
voted
"Rookie
of
the
Year"
for
the
season
and
still
holds
the
NEXTEL
CUP
record
for
being
the
highest
placing
rookie
in
a
season.
Hylton's
storied
career
also
includes
ten
top-10
finishes
in
the
NASCAR
season
long
points
championship
as
well
as
victories
at
Talladega
and
Richmond
in
NEXTEL
CUP
and
Daytona
in
the
Grand
American
Series.
